Westpork are proud to share our committment to being 100% net renewable by 2030.

Westpork are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and expand our use of renewable energy. We recognise the significant emissions contributions of our wider industry, and by committing to investing in renewable and sustainable practises, we hope to play our part in reducing this impact, as well as driving industry standards. 

Anaerobic pond systems

Westpork have installed three Covered Anaerobic Pond systems, which supply the farm with renewable energy by using the Biogas harvested from the pond.

March 2025 saw the commissioning of Westpork's third Biogas system. The third system gives Westpork the capacity to move to 100% net renewable energy.

We are currently working through the regulatory framework to allow us to export power from this site and deliver on our core objective of 100% net renewable energy.

how it works

Biogas is a renewable energy source, created through a process called anaerobic disgestion, where organic waste is consumed by microbes which in turn release a gas, primarily made up of methane and carbon dioxide.

Effluent from our piggery flows into a covered pond, where the Biogas is produced, captured and refined into methane. This is used to run the generators and provide electricity for our site. Excess green, renewable electricity is sold back into the national grid.

Combusting the methane turns it into carbon dioxide, which has 1/25th of the impact as a greenhouse gas.
